Years ago I was on a fan-based forum for the Hercules and Xena series which was more or less in-character socializing rather than a story with a plot driven by one particular person.  Occassionally little sub-plots got started and ran for a while, but mostly it was development of characters and development of our little Hercules/Xena based world.

I know that creating a story without a plot is the fastest way to have one die here on SC (the story may die before it starts, but its orpse will stay on the story list forever - mauahahahahaha!), but if people knew going into it that it was more a joint project then one person having to run everything how well would it fly on SC?

That really depends on the people. I've seen people take on that challenge knowingly and then just never post a thing. I've seen them limp along and I've seen people run with it, although that seems to be two or three people who simply work very well together.

It can be done. But I will tell you this; no manner of telling people up front what will be, or explaining how a story will work, can make some people either bother to read that concept or be capable of understanding it. You just have to go with it and see what happens.

Best to have a good premise at least, that grabs people's interest. And it sounds as if you already have something in mind.

Not really.  I just want to write but tend to run into the same 3 problems.  1) Players want to be led by the SC and resist any attempt by other players to interact, 2) the SC is so rigid in their plot idea that the players can't interact or 3) a story gets moving along and the SC disappears.

Like you said, most people won't read the concept when they sign up for something, but maybe if the idea were presented on the forums then the people who do actually read stuff might see it and say, "Hey, I'd be willing to try something like that."  Genre/premise/whatever can be agreed on when interest is shown.

I have run into sort of the same problem, I am trying to get a shared story concept off the ground rather than a plot with people taking the roles of individual characters; sort of a collective muse or a fireside fantasy.

No dice, as it were.

But I would be interested to hear what you have in mind, would it be restricted to the Herc universe?
