Hello everyone,

My name is Thea and I am new to Storycrafter! I heard about it from friends before but never had time to check it out for myself and, as far as I can see there are some really great stories and some talented people out here! Smiley

While I am new to this place, I have been a GM for tabletop rpgs before and have come up with a particular game/story that I find is very quick and entertaining for those who don't have time or are not willing to read lengthy rules but like acting out. I believe that with some tweaking it would be perfect for this group, but I'd like to have some feedback before I begin.

The story is a typical murder mystery tale a la Gosford Park, Clue or Agatha Christie's novels. The players are members of a wealthy family that come together for the holidays after being estranged for several years. Obviously, a murder happens and the characters have exactly one night to find out who the culprit is before he/she escapes or they become the next victim.

Rulewise, this story is closer to the party game 'Mafia' than to an rpg. One player is chosen randomly by the Storyteller to be the assassin whose goal it is to survive the night. The story is also further complicated by having each character have a secret (something they would die to protect) and a suspicion (a fact about another character they think they know and must confirm before the night is out). Obviously those are usually at odds with each other and can be great fun.

How about it? Does this sound like something you guys would play?

Cheers,
T.

*chorus* Hi Thea... Welcome to the anonymous Storycrafter self-help group. My name is SuddenS, and I am a Storycrafterholic. Yes, that is a mouthful, but it is very accurate indeed. Smiley On SC, we are kind of a small group that has been here forever, another small group that has been around for a few years (me!) and then the travelling crowd that has the potential to turn into one of those groups. Its always interesting to find out who is what!

Okay, I'll stop now, I am scaring myself.

The only problem (if you want to call it that) that I can see with your story idea is that you would have to work rather closely with the writers on the character creation... not every writer likes that. You might even want to let them also work together on their characters as you mentioned that it is a family... which is always (in my opinion) very hard to roleplay. The characters would have had random encounters with each other before and will have already formed opinions about each other which is hard to do.
If I were in your place, I would also not randomly choose someone to play the murderer but rather ask them to include their willingness to do that (or lack thereof) to include in their character application in the private section that only they and you can see. This way you will probably still have a pool of potential murders you can choose from, but no one gets 'forced' to do it.

Last but not least, some people find it hard to write about the process of their character finding out who 'did it' if they themselves already know the culprits identity... so you might not want to let the murderer write about that in public, like f.e. the way he prepares the poison or something Smiley Maybe let him/her pm the victim?

Thats all I can think of right now (and as I am currently busy and with the stories I am writing in I probably won't join, so don't necessarily listen to me! Cheesy).

Good luck.
