I have an idea for a fantasy story and wanted to run it here first to check for any interest.

The story involves four very different characters - a thief, a magic user, a warrior and a priest. Each of the characters begins in a different part of the world (with their own thread) and, in the opening of the story, each is involved in a seemingly unrelated storyline. The idea is that these four characters will come together and realise that all of their individual storylines are actually tied together, and hopefully form a party. I can't go into too much detail about what this overall storyline will be, for fear of spoiling the surprise, but it's quite epic and will (as most fantasy stories do) detail the rise of an ancient evil which everyone (save for our four characters) believes is long gone. As the storyline progresses, the world around the characters will darken as nations go to war and various secret societies become known to the protagonists.

The setting is pretty much your standard fantasy world and i'm going to be running it either freeform or very rules lite.

If you want more information on the storyline i can provide it here or in a PM (although bear in mind that, should you be thinking of joining, you may spoil some of the plot twists).

Any interest?

I would be interested in joining this story. Sounds like a nice departure from the normal fantasy "party meeting."

Meeting in a tavern IS cliché... but it's faster.  The question is, do you really believe that you'll stick with it long enough to bring everyone together, and (more importantly) will anyone ELSE believe it?

I think that this is a really negative view on what the author is proposing. I mean, you don’t have to have each character go through their own personal Odyssey just to meet up with the others.

I have run several stories in which the characters do not meet at the start, and throughout all of them I have ended up with all the players meeting up, forming a group, and then trying to fulfill a common objective.

It may be a negative view, but its also sort of realistic. Stories tend to slow down and disappear after awhile around here, I've noticed. Now, if the author of this idea is somebody who will follow through with the whole concept, it would most definitely be something I'd be interested in taking part in. I just have to say that whether the whole thing will come together or fall apart is a valid concern.

Yes, it's faster but it would be detrimental to the story I want to tell. I'm not interested in telling a story where a group of characters venture into a tavern, meet each other and say "Hey, you know that evil wizard that's taking over the world? Let's do something about it. Sure is lucky I met you guys!"

I want a story where the characters have a reason for meeting each other because of events which have occured.

((The following is an example and won't actually be used in the story)

Wouldn't it be better if the Priest is sent to find half of an ancient talisman by his Order only to find that the Thief has already stolen it for an employer? It then becomes apparent that this employer is looking for both parts of the talisman in order to resurrect a long forgotten deity.

After surviving an assassination attempt by the employer, the two characters arrive at the location of the second half of the talisman only to find the tribe which was protecting it destroyed and The Warrior (the only survivor) seeking vengeance. Following the destroyers of The Warrior's village across the land, the three encounter both a secret Temple and The Wizard whose bride has been captured by a mysterious cult who are now seeking to sacrifice her during a ritual. The four break into the temple and confront The Thief's employer only to realise that he is merely the pawn of Queen Marauder who was banished from her kingdom years earlier and has been raising a secret army to do so...

((End of example)

As to whether I'll stick with it, would you stick with it? I have to trust the players just as much as they have to trust me. Why do any of us join stories on this site, if not because we hope that the story will conclude eventually and that the others involved won't suddenly disappear before that conclusion is reached.

Maybe you're new here, or maybe you're just idealistic.  Most stories crash and burn right after all the characters are introduced.  Most writers on this site are very skeptical about anyone's long-range plans for a story.  You know the expression "Once bitten, Twice shy"?  Around here, people have mostly been bitten a couple of dozen times each.

My point was merely that a lot of potential applicants might pass your story over, on the expectation that it would not only GO nowhere (like so very many stories), but also manage to START nowhere.  I'm not casting any aspersions on you or your story.  I'm just placing things in a larger context, to give you a little added perspective on how others might view the game/plan.

I myself am both new AND idealistic... I'd be all over that story.
